"Looking forward, when I predictably get fed
up of a "sane" job, how the heck do I break into the games
industry as a UK citizen (offhand, I can think of roughly one
company in the UK developing games)?"

"I believe you'll find that quite a few UK software companies
are developing games. Even Sierra has a couple of groups in
Europe -- Coktel in France, which develops graphic adventures
and soccer simulations (among other things), and our
localization group in Ireland, which re-tools all the US
games for release in various European nations.
"My best advice to you is to attend the big European
electronics show, ECTS, being held this year from September
6-9. Since most UK software houses send representatives to
this show, it'd be a great place to scout out potential
employers! Many of them might be 'startup' companies, but
sometimes these fledgling development houses might be more
inclined than a large company to take a chance on an
inexperienced programmer.
